Hat Sizing and How to Measure your Head

An average head size for a man is 58 cms in European Sizing or 7 1/8 UK sizing and 7 1/4 US sizing. The average head size for a lady is 55 cms. Probably the largest head size you will ever find, will be 64cms and the smallest 51cms.

Head sizes and shapes differ from country to country with the smallest heads being in the Far Eastern countries and the largest in Germany. With regards to shape, these can be either very round or oval, with the far eastern countries having a rounder head and the western countries tending to have a more oval shape.

Calculating Your Own Hat Size
To take your metric (European) hat size a measurement of the head circumference should be taken in centimetres. This is best achieved by passing a cloth tape measure around the head. It is important that this measurement is taken where a hat would normally rest. To take a measurement, position the tape measure so that it rests just above the brow at the front of the head, and passes round the head at its maximum circumference. Pull the tape so that is taught but not too tight and take a measurement.

Hats are sized to the nearest whole centimetre so it is advisable to size up if your head falls between two measurements

The way a hat is worn is obviously dependent upon personal taste so this suggestion is only offered as a guide
